Why is this work necessary?

The current water mains, which date back to 1900, have now reached the end of their operational life. The new water mains will provide secure safe and reliable drinking water supplies for homes and businesses.

What does it involve?

The project will involve laying approximately 870m of water main along Harestone Valley Road. This is a major project that will be completed in a number of phases.

This booklet and frequently asked questions sheet, explain the four stages needed to lay a water main and answers some key questions customers sometimes ask; such as, why their road hasn’t been fully restored or why we start excavating again so soon after having completed laying a water main.

Traffic management

Due to the location of the existing water main, and a number of other utilities already in the ground, we will be required to work in the public highway. We will also be working in the private section of Harestone Valley Road. Traffic management will be in place to keep residents, motorists and our workforce safe. This will include the following:

  • Temporary traffic signals
  • Road closure
  • Priority Boards

Road closures are used when we are unable to provide the required legal distances around our works. When this is the case the road will be closed in 50 to 100m sections at a time and within these sections the road will be fully reinstated before we move on to the next phase. Access to property driveways within a closed section will be provided throughout.

Information boards will be visible in the affected areas prior to any traffic management being install.

Timetable of work

The project will be split into phases which will run simultaneously, in accordance with the approximate dates below, starting week commencing 8 July 2019:

Phase Road Name From To Traffic Management
1

Harestone Valley Road

(Pre-prep school to Weald Way)

8 July 2019 September 2019
2

Harestone Valley Road

(Weald Way to School Lane)

8 July 2019 December 2019 Traffic lights if necessary

Our delivery partner Clancy Docwra will be working 7:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Will water supplies be cut off?

Apart from minor interruptions of 30 to 60 minutes as each property is individually connected to temporary and replacement water mains, water supplies will continue as normal while the old water main is being replaced.

We will make sure those customers whose water supply is directly affected by these works are notified in advance.

Collaborating with Caterham School

Caterham School is widening the road between the pre-prep school and Weald Way and we will co-ordinate our works here during the school holidays to reduce the disruption.
