Inholms Lane, Spook Hill, North Holmwood main replacement

We are working with project partner Clancy Docwra to lay 1815m of new main pipeline along Inholms Lane and Spook Hill to replace the existing main which dates back to the 1930s. The new pipeline will secure the reliable supply of high quality, safe drinking water to local homes and business.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience these essential works may cause and thank you, in advance, for your co-operation and patience.

Spook Hill

Good progress continues to be made on Spook Hill and the one-way system remains in place.

Our current programme indicates that all works will be complete by week commencing 16 September.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your co-operation and patience. For more information or to discuss your individual needs, please contact our Customer Services team on 01737 772000.

01 August 2019

Spook Hill

Works are continuing to progress well on Spook Hill.

On Monday 29 July we installed a one-way system on Spook Hill between the junction of the A24 and the property named “Wood Leasons”. Please see previous updates below for further details.

24 July 2019

Spook Hill

Works are continuing to progress well on Spook Hill. As of week next week (week commencing 29 July) we will be installing a one-way system to allow us to complete the final phase of the mainlaying up to the junction with the A24. Please see previous updates below for further details. The diversion route is detailed in this plan.

12 July 2019

Spook Hill

Works are progressing well along Spook Hill with two-way temporary traffic lights.

As we approach the final two weeks of the mains laying phase, we will need to turn a section of Spook Hill (approximately 100m from the junction of A24) into a one-way system with priority given to traffic exiting onto A24. Two-way traffic flows will be maintained north of this point (i.e. north of the property “Waverley”). All traffic wishing to enter Spook Hill via A24 will need to follow a signed diversion route (see update on 4 July) which brings road users back up to the A24 roundabout entrance to Spook Hill.

The reason for the one-way system, which has been approved by Surrey County Council, is to allow us to work as close to the junction of A24 as possible without the use of traffic lights which may cause traffic to back up onto the dual carriageway during peak times.

Our current programme indicates that the one-way system will be in place for approximately four weeks starting week commencing 29 July

For the latest access information please contact our Customer Services team on 01737 772000.

Thank you for your co-operation and patience.

04 July 2019

Inholms Lane / Spook Hill

We have completed the transfers on Inholm’s Lane and now continuing with our mains replacement on Spook Hill. The scheme is being completed under two way traffic lights; when we get 100m from the junction of the A24 we are implementing a one way system to direct the village traffic out towards the A24 and will block the exit slip road stopping vehicles entering from this junction. The diversion route is detailed in this plan.

For the latest access information please contact our Customer Services team on 01737 772000.

Thank you for your co-operation and patience.

1 July 2019

Inholms Lane / Spook Hill

The service transfer on Inholms Lane is complete and we continue with the mains replacement work on Spook Hill. The scheme is being completed under two-way traffic lights. When the works reach 100m from the junction of the A24 a one-way system will be in place to direct the village traffic out towards the A24. The one-way system will also block the exit slip road and stop vehicles entering from this junction.

For the latest access information please contact our Customer Services team on 01737 772000.

Thank you for your co-operation and patience.

19 June 2019

Inholms Lane / Spook Hill

The service transfer phase is going well on Inholms Lane with only three more properties to complete. The road is currently closed outside of the North Holmwood Sports Club on Inholms Lane. All properties to the east of the sports club can access Inholms Lane via the Chart Lane South entrance and all properties to the west must use the Spook Hill entrance.

We are hoping to complete the service transfer phase by the start of next week. At which time we will open Inholms Lane and then shift our site to Spook Hill with traffic lights.

For the latest access information please contact our Customer Services team on 01737 772000.

Thank you for your co-operation and patience.

11 June 2019

The new main has passed its testing phase and we are now underway with the individual property transfers in Inholms Lane.

The Spook Hill junction with Inholms Lane is now open with no access to Inholms Lane from the Chart Lane South entrance.

For the next two weeks there will be no access to Inholms Lane via Chart Lane South and drivers will have to access Inholms Lane via Spook Hill. Access to Inholms Lane will switch from Spook Hill to Chart Lane South as we progress works along the road. For the latest access information please contact our Customer Services team on 01737 772000.

Thank you for your co-operation and patience.

The new main in Inholms Lane is currently being chlorinated (disinfected) and tested for quality. During this time there will be a limited site presence, however please rest assured that work is ongoing.

The Spook Hill junction with Inholms Lane is now open with restricted access from the Chart Lane South entrance.

From week commencing 3 June we will be working on the transfer of services from the old main to the new main. During this period, there will be no access to Inholms Lane via Chart Lane South and drivers will have to access Inholms Lane via Spook Hill. Access to Inholms Lane will switch from Spook Hill to Chart Lane South as we progress works along the road. For the latest access information please contact our Customer Services team on 01737 772000.

Thank you for your co-operation and patience.

20 May 2019

The Spook Hill junction with Inholms Lane will be opened to residents only from 17 May. The reason the road will be open for residential access only is because there is still a small restriction in place at the Chart Lane South junction.

From the week beginning 20 May, the new main in Inholms Lane will be chlorinated (disinfected) and tested for quality. During this time there will be a limited site presence, however please rest assured work is ongoing.

Once testing is completed we will commence with the transfer of services from the old main to the new main.

10 May 2019

Mainlaying is now complete in Inholms Lane. The Spook Hill junction of Inholms Lane is still closed and we currently have 2-way traffic lights on Spook Hill itself. Drivers can only access Inholms Lane via Chart Lane South

As of next week we will be preparing for the next phase of the project. This will involve us returning to Inholms Lane to commence works on individual property transfers.

Why is this work necessary?

The current water main, which date back to the 1930s, has now reached the end of its operational life. The new main will provide secure safe and reliable drinking water supplies for homes and businesses.

What does it involve?

The project will involve laying approximately 1815m of new main along Inholms Lane and Spook Hill.  It is a major project that will be completed in four stages, starting on Inholms Lane.

The leaflet Keep your water flowing explains the four stages needed to lay a water main and answers some key questions customers sometimes ask such as, why their road hasn’t been fully restored or why we start excavating again so soon after having completed laying a water main.

Work on your property

Keep your water flowing also explains that it may be necessary to carry out a small amount of work on your property in order to remove the original stopcock and replace the old pipe. Please be assured that if any of your property is disturbed it will be fully reinstated as part of our works. You may however have reasons why you would prefer us not to disturb your property, such as a newly laid driveway for example. If this is the case please print, sign, date and return the cut-off slip which you will find on the last page of the leaflet or contact our Customer Services team.

Traffic Management

Due to the location of the existing water main and the number of other utilities already in the ground, we will  need to work in the public highway.  To keep residents, motorists and our workforce safe we have to put traffic management systems in place. This will include the following:

  • Road closure (Inholms Lane)
  • Temporary traffic signals (Spook Hill)

Road closures are used when we are unable to provide the required legal distances around our works. When this is the case, the road will be closed in 100 to 150meter sections at a time and within these sections the road will be fully reinstated before we move on to the next phase. Access to property driveways within a closed section will be provided throughout and information boards will be visible in the affected areas prior to any closure being implemented.

Diversion route

Update: 27 February 2019

Inholms Lane

Work is underway in Inholms Lane and a full road closure is in place. Access is being maintained for residents and emergency services, however we ask that all other road users follow the signed diversion route.

We are currently working between the junctions with Chart Lane South and Rusper Way.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience these essential works may cause and thank you for your co-operation and patience. For further information or to discuss your individual needs, please contact us on 01737 772000.

Timetable of work

The estimated start date for this project is the week commencing 18 February 2019. We will start with the closure of Inholms Lane at the junction of Chart Lane South and head west towards Spook Hill.

Traffic lights will then be installed on Spook Hill in April 2019 as we head south towards the junction with A24.

We plan to complete the project as a whole in August 2019.

Whilst our end date is August 2019, we may be able to reopen Inholms Lane after the mainlaying phase of the project which ends in May 2019. Please continue to check this page for the latest updates and information.

We have contacted the local bus companies and refuse collection contractors to inform them of the coming road closure of Inholms Lane. If you experience any issues with either of these services, please contact Surrey County Council. With regards to personal deliveries, we ask that you make the relevant company aware that a signed diversion route will be in place from 18 February.

Our delivery partner Clancy Docwra will be working 7:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Will water supplies be cut off?

Apart from minor interruptions of 30 to 60 minutes as each property is individually connected to temporary and replacement water main, water supplies will continue as normal while the old water main is being replaced.

We will make sure those customers whose water supply is directly affected by these works are notified in advance.

What does this mean for businesses, schools and organisations in the area?

We understand the work we carry out on our water mains can cause disruption and we want to work closely with local businesses, schools and other organisations to help ease any impact.

We would encourage organisations to contact us on 01737 772000 so we can:

  • Work closely to plan the specific timing, location and duration of works in the area
  • Work together to ensure deliveries can get through and customers can still access any shops, restaurants and businesses
  • Provide extra signage to ensure everyone knows it is “business as usual”
  • Share information on the scheme to be circulated to residents, customers, employees etc.

Where our work leads to unavoidable disruption to the usual operation of businesses, and in particular where there is clear evidence that our work has had an impact on the profits, we will pay compensation for that loss. Please use this link http://www.waterplc.com/pages/business/your-bill-and-account/business/loss-of-profit-claims/ to get more information about our policy for loss of business earnings.
