We have laid approximately 730m of main so far from Browns Corner to the junction with Knipp Hill. Our original plan at this point was to close Knipp Hill to allow us to lay a further 125m of main up to the junction of Pony Chase. However, we have since discovered that we need to close a small section of Water Lane to allow us to carry out a connection into the existing network.

We intend to close Water Lane between the junctions of Knipp Hill and Eaton Park Road on Monday 13 May until Friday 17 May. During this time a signed diversion route will be in place.

Following the completion of the works on Water Lane, we will then progress with the Knipp Hill closure from Monday 20 May. This closure will remain in place for approximately 5 weeks.

Our works in Pony Chase will continue as normal throughout the works detailed above.

Please accept our apologies for the short notice for these closures, which are as a result of unforeseen circumstances on site. Road closures are used when we are unable to provide the required legal distances around our works and to keep residents, motorists and our workforce safe.

Why is this work necessary?

The current water mains, which date back to 1930, have now reached the end of their operational life. The new water mains will provide secure safe and reliable drinking water supplies for homes and businesses.

What does it involve?

We will be laying approximately 855 metres of new main along Littleheath Lane and part of Knipp Hill (up to the junction Pony Chase).  It is a major project that will be completed in four stages. We will keep you updated on progress. Our leaflet 'Keeping your water flowing' explains the four stages needed to lay a water main and answers some key questions customers sometimes ask; such as, why their road hasn’t been fully restored or why we start excavating again so soon after having completed laying a water main.

Work on your property

The leaflet also explains that it may be necessary to carry out a small amount of work on your property in order to remove the original stopcock and replace the old pipe. Please rest assured that if any of your property is disturbed it will be fully reinstated as part of our works. You may however, have reasons why you would prefer us not to disturb your property, such as a newly laid driveway for example. If this is the case please get in touch with us using the contact details at the end of this page.

Traffic management

Due to the location of the existing water main, and a number of other utilities already in the ground, we will be required to work in the public highway. Therefore, traffic management will be required to keep residents, motorists and our workforce safe. This will include the following:

  • Temporary traffic signals
  • Road closures

Road closures are used when we are unable to provide the required legal distances around our works. When this is the case the road will be closed in 100 to 150meter sections at a time and within these sections the road will be fully reinstated before we move on to the next phase. Access to property driveways within a closed section will be provided throughout.   All traffic management arrangements and necessary diversions will be advertised on our website at seswater.co.uk/Cobham and information boards will be visible in the affected areas prior to any closure being implemented.

Please view the approved diversion route for Knipp Hill, Cobham here and for Littleheath Lane, Cobham here.

Timetable of work

The estimated start date is the week commencing 7 January 2019 (traffic lights)

Week commencing 14 January 2019 (road closure)

We plan to be completed in August 2019

Whilst our end date is August 2019, we may be able to reopen the road after the mainlaying phase of the project which ends in April 2019. Please continue to check our website for the latest updates and information.

We have contacted the local bus companies and refuse collection contractors to inform them of the coming road closure. If you experience any issues with either of these services, please contact Surrey County Council. With regards to personal deliveries, we ask that you make the relevant company aware that a signed diversion route will be in place from 14 January.

Our delivery partner Clancy Docwra will be working 7:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Will water supplies be cut off?

Apart from minor interruptions of 30 to 60 minutes as each property is individually connected to temporary and replacement water mains, water supplies will continue as normal while the old water main is being replaced.

We will make sure those customers whose water supply is directly affected by these works are notified in advance.

What does this mean for businesses, schools and organisations in the area?

We understand the work we carry out on our water mains can cause disruption and we want to work closely with local businesses, schools and other organisations to help ease any impact.

We would encourage organisations to contact us on 01737 772000 so we can:

• Work closely to plan the specific timing, location and duration of works in the area

• Work together to ensure deliveries can get through and customers can still access any shops, restaurants and businesses

• Provide extra signage to ensure everyone knows it is “business as usual”

• Share information on the scheme to be circulated to residents, customers, employees etc.

Where our work leads to unavoidable disruption to the usual operation of businesses, and in particular where there is clear evidence that our work has had an impact on the profits, we will pay compensation for that loss. Please visit our website for more information about our policy for loss of business earnings.
