Brockham Mains Replacement

We are investing in an important water mains renewal project in Brockham to secure safe and reliable drinking water supplies for homes and businesses.

The current water mains, which date back to the 1920s, have now reached the end of their operational life. The new water main will provide secure safe and reliable drinking water supplies for homes and businesses for many years to come.

We are aware that some customers have experienced issues with their regular bus services on Brockham Lane. A shuttle service is being provided throughout the duration of phase 1 affecting the A25 junction to The Cedars. For any queries relating to this service, please contact Surrey CC Passenger Transport on 0300 200 1003 or you can email at passenger.transport@surreycc.gov.uk

What will the project involve?

The project will involve laying approximately 1.2km of new main along Brockham Lane and Middle Street. It is a major project that will be completed in three phases:

• Phase 1 – A25 junction to The Cedars

• Phase 2 – The Cedars to River Mole Bridge

• Phase 3 – River Mole Bridge to Wheelers Lane

The leaflet Keeping your water flowing, explains the four stages needed to lay a water main and answers some key questions you may have.

You can view the exact location of each phase of works here.

Traffic management

Due to the location of the existing water main, and a number of other utilities already in the ground, we will need to work in the public highway. To keep residents, motorists and our workforce safe we have to put traffic management systems in place. This will include the following:

  • Junction Closure (Phase 1)
  • Temporary traffic signals (Phase 2)
  • Road Closure (Phase 3)

Road closures are used when we are unable to provide the required legal distances around our works. When this is the case the road will be closed in 100 to 150m sections at a time and within these sections the road will be fully reinstated before we move on to the next phase. Access to property driveways within a closed section will be provided throughout.

Timetable of work

  • Phase 1 - Week commencing 23 September 2019 to mid-November 2019
  • Phase 2 - Mid-November 2019 to January 2020
  • Phase 3 - January 2020 to July 2020

We are aware of the Bonfire Night Event which takes place in the village in November. It is our intention to demobilise the site completely for this event in order to minimise disruption.

We have contacted the local bus companies and refuse collection contractors to inform them of the planned road closures. If you experience any issues with either of these services, please contact Surrey County Council. With regards to personal deliveries, we ask that you make the relevant company aware that a signed diversion route will be in place for phases 1 and 3.

Our delivery partner Clancy Docwra will be working 7:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Will water supplies be cut off?
Apart from minor interruptions of 30 to 60 minutes, as each property is individually connected to temporary and replacement water mains, water supplies will continue as normal while the old water main is being replaced.

We will make sure those customers whose water supply is directly affected by these works are notified in advance.

What does this mean for businesses, schools and organisations in the area?

We understand the work we carry out on our water mains can cause disruption and we want to work closely with local businesses, schools and other organisations to help ease any impact.

We would encourage organisations to contact us on 01737 772000 so we can:

  • Work closely to plan the specific timing, location and duration of works in the area
  • Work together to ensure deliveries can get through and customers can still access any shops, restaurants and businesses
  • Provide extra signage to ensure everyone knows it is “business as usual”
  • Share information on the scheme to be circulated to residents, customers, employees etc.

Where our work leads to unavoidable disruption to the usual operation of businesses, and in particular where there is clear evidence that our work has had an impact on the profits, we will pay compensation for that loss. Please visit our website for more information about our policy for loss of business earnings.
