Sutton and East Surrey Water plans to start road works towards the end of July on the Mogador to Burgh Heath pipeline. This follows Reigate and Banstead Borough Council confirming that the company does not need to carry out a full Environmental Impact Assessment on the proposed route.(See earlier press release dated 20 May 2011).
The vital new 500mm (20in) diameter pipeline will provide greater flexibility and resilience within the company’s distribution network, particularly during periods of low rainfall and drought. Approximately two thirds of the pipeline will be laid in the A217. A detailed map of the route can be viewed here.
Operations Director, Mike Hegarty, said: “We are delighted that we can at last get on with installing this vital pipeline. We will do all we can to minimise disruption to local residents and drivers on the A217 and surrounding roads”.
Sutton and East Surrey Water will set up a storage compound off Mogador Road during July and preparatory work will start on the section of main that will run across open countryside before joining the A217.
The contractors will work extended hours where necessary and practical in order to complete the project as quickly as possible but regrettably, drivers will be reduced to one lane where work is taking place on the A217.
“Where necessary, we will also consider working throughout the weekend at complex crossings and connections”, said Mr Hegarty.
“Again, in order to complete the project as quickly as possible, we will start work at several different locations at the same time – especially during the school holiday period when the road is hopefully less busy. We apologise for the disruption this vital work will cause but our aim throughout will be to minimise the time we spend on the A217.”
The company is holding two Drop-in information events where local residents who would like more information, or have questions, will be able to view and discuss detailed plans. These will be held at Kingswood Village Hall on Saturday, 25 June (1 pm-6 pm) and St John’s Church Hall, Tadworth, on Wednesday, 6 July (10 am-9 pm).
Young children will be welcome – facilities will be provided to interest them while parents view the display.
