Sutton and East Surrey Water has submitted a request to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council for a Screening Opinion now it has finalised plans to lay this vital new 500mm diameter pipeline which will provide greater flexibility and resilience within the company’s distribution network, particularly during periods of low rainfall and drought.
The company plans to begin work on 25 July – after local schools close for the holidays. The project will take approximately 19 weeks.
Operations Director, Mike Hegarty, said the company had “finally confirmed a route which, given all the difficulties we have encountered, is the best option in terms of enabling us to install the main, while minimising disruption to local residents and drivers on the A217 and surrounding roads”.
He said the company was “very conscious that routing the main in sections of the A217 is causing concern to some local residents and businesses but this has proven to be unavoidable. We are determined to limit the disruption this may cause in every way we can.
“For example, we plan to maximise daylight working hours and work at least six days a week. Where practical we will also consider working weekends at complex crossings and connections. We also aim to commence the scheme at three different locations at the same time during the school holiday period when the road is hopefully less busy. However, due to the complexity and scale of the project, it will not be possible to carry out the whole of the works during this period.”
If the company receives a positive response to the Screening Opinion request, it plans to hold two Drop-in information events where local residents will be able to view and discuss detailed plans and ask questions. These will be held at Kingswood Village Hall on Saturday, 25 June (1 pm-6 pm) and St John’s Church Hall, Tadworth, on Wednesday, 6 July (10 am-9 pm).
Young children will be welcome – facilities will be provided to interest them while parents view the display.
