Ottways Lane
Last week the traffic lights were removed and the road closure shifted into its next phase.

Works are progressing well in this phase of the closure which is between the junctions of Taleworth Road and Agates Lane. All properties to the south of the closure will need to access Ottways Lane from the Grange Road end. All properties to the north of the closure must continue to use the northern entrance to Ottways Lane (junction with the A24). Access is maintained to all properties located within the closure itself.

The junction of West Farm Avenue and Ottways Lane is now closed to allow us to work safely in this area. All residents who live on West Farm Avenue (and the adjoining roads) will need to use the Barnett Wood Lane entrance and exit. We are also using one half of the Agates Lane junction for storage.

Ottways Lane
Works are continuing along Ottways Lane where we are currently working between the junctions of Harriotts Lane and West Farm Avenue. Road users who wish to access the schools on Grange Road are advised to do so from the A24, rather than using Ottways Lane. Traffic lights are still in place to safely manage access into and out of Taleworth Road.

This closure will be in place for approximately 6-8 weeks. All properties to the south of the closure will need to access Ottways Lane from the Grange Road end. All properties to the north of the closure will continue to use the northern entrance to Ottways Lane (junction with the A24). We will maintain access to all properties located within the closure itself.

Our current programme indicates that the closure between Harriotts Lane and Taleworth Road will be in place for the next 2 weeks.

The next phase of the rolling road closure will be between the junctions of Taleworth Road and Agates Lane. As part of this closure we will also need to close the West Farm Avenue junction with Ottways Lane. More information on the Taleworth to Agates closure will be posted on this page in due course.

The Harriots Lane junction is now open to all road users, however access is via the Grange Road end to Ottways Lane.

The project will see a new water main laid in sections of the following roads:

  • Grange Road

  • Ottways Lane

Why is this work necessary?

The existing 3” mains that supplies customers along Grange Road and Ottways Lane cannot cope with the demand of an increasing local population which is heightened by an increase in developments in the area. By installing the new 180mm water main, we will effectively double the capacity and immediately improve water pressures.

Additionally, large parts of the network mains in this area were laid in the late Victorian era and the pipes are now reaching the end of their operational life. We have assessed, through analysis of recent failures, that mains replacement is required.

These improvements will ensure that we continue to provide our customers with a high quality and reliable service for many years to come.

What does it involve?

The project will involve laying approximately 1.5 kilometres of 180mm main along Grange Road and Ottways Lane. The existing 3” main, which dates back to the 1930s, will be decommissioned and new service connections will be made to all affected properties.

Traffic management

Due to the location of the existing water main, and a number of other utilities already in the ground, we will be required to work in the public highway. Therefore, traffic management will be required to keep residents, motorists and our workforce safe. This will include the following:

  • Road closures

  • Junction closures

  • Bus stop closures

Road closures are used when we are unable provide the required legal distances around our works however, please be assured we will ensure all customers within the closures will still have access their properties.

Timetable of work

The project will be split into two phases, which will run one after the other:

  • Phase 1: Grange Road

  • Phase 2: Ottways Lane

Our delivery partner Clancy Docwra will be working 7:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday however, we will also be working at weekends during Phase 1 in order to condense these works into the school holidays.

Phase 1: Grange Road

We will start the site set-up for Phase 1 during the week commencing 24 July 2017 and aim to complete this phase by September 2017, before the schools return for the start of the new term.

Phase 2: Ottways Lane

We will start the site set-up for Phase 2 during the week commencing 4 September 2017 and aim to complete by summer 2018. We plan to phase our works accordingly by working on smaller sections of the road in a bid to reduce disruption.

Will water supplies be cut off?

Water supplies will continue as normal while the old water main is being replaced, apart from temporary interruptions as properties are individually connected to the new water main. During this work your water supply will be interrupted for 30 to 60 minutes.

We will make sure those customers whose water supply is directly affected by these works are notified in advance.

What does this mean for businesses, schools and organisations in the area?

We understand the work we carry out on our water mains can cause disruption and we want to work closely with local businesses, schools and other organisations to help ease any impact.

We would encourage organisations to contact us by email CustomerServicesOPS@seswater.co.uk so we can:

  • Plan the specific timing, location and duration of works in the area

  • Ensure deliveries can get through and customers can still access any shops, restaurants and businesses

  • Provide extra signage to ensure everyone knows it is “business as usual”

  • Share information on the scheme to be circulated to residents, customers, employees etc.

Where our work leads to unavoidable disruption to the usual operation of businesses, and in particular where there is clear evidence that our work has had an impact on the profits, we will pay compensation for that loss. More information about our policy of compensating businesses can be found on our website or you can call our Customer Services team on 01737 772000.

We have contacted all customers within the catchment area of the two phases to give residents and business some more detailed information.

This page will be updated regularly to provide information on our progress.
