26 May 2017

Work begins week commencing 29 May to replace the old water mains from Beare Green to Capel. The first stage will see traffic lights being put up near Holmwood Station and approximately 200m south of Beare Green Roundabout.

The project will see a new water main laid in sections of the following roads:

  • Beare Green Roundabout

  • Horsham Road

  • Holmwood Station

  • Hoyle Hill

  • Old Horsham Road

  • Seaman’s Green

  • The Street

Why is this work necessary?

There are two reasons we need to do this work:

1 )The mains renewal between Beare Green and Capel is an important scheme that will safeguard the supplies of local residents long in to the future. The Capel area (including Ockley) is at the extremity of our supply network and one of the main aims of this scheme is to improve connectivity and our ability to supply this area from other parts of the network if required. When the scheme is complete it will improve connectivity with Dorking, providing benefits to both areas. This ties in with one of our key business commitments to make our network more resilient for our customers.

2) Large parts of the network mains in this area were laid in the late Victorian era and the pipes are now reaching the end of their operational life. We have assessed, through analysis of recent failures, that mains replacement is required in the identified areas. These improvements will ensure that we continue to provide a high quality and reliable service for many years to come.

What does it involve?

The project will involve laying approximately 4km of 250mm HPPE main between Beare Green and Capel Village as well as renewing the service connections to all properties. This will allow us to decommission the existing 6” and 4” mains which date back to the late Victorian era.

Traffic management

Due to the need to work in the highway, which is where the old water main is laid, and a number of other utility pipes and cables already in the ground that will need to be avoided, we will need to use some traffic management to keep residents, motorists and our workforce safe. This will include the following:

  • Road closures

  • Speed restrictions

  • Junction closures

All road closures will only be used in the event that we cannot provide the required legal distances around our works. We are currently finalising the detailed traffic management arrangements with Surrey Highways. However, please be assured we will ensure all customers within the closures will still have access their properties.

All traffic management arrangements and necessary diversions will be well advertised on this website at and information boards will be installed on site prior to any closure being implemented.

Timetable of work

The project will be split into two phases which will run simultaneously:

  • Phase One: Holmwood Station to Beare Green Roundabout

  • Phase Two: Beare Green Roundabout to Capel Village

Our delivery partner Clancy Docwra will be working 0730 to 1600 Monday to Friday to complete the project as quickly as possible, while also giving the local community some respite at weekends from this essential work.

Phase One: Holmwood Station (Moorhurst Lane) to Beare Green Roundabout

We will start the site set-up for Phase One during the week commencing 29 May 2017 and aim to complete the most disruptive mainlaying phase by September 2017. Following completion of the mainlaying, minor works will then continue until January 2018.

Phase Two: Beare Green Roundabout to Capel Village (Rusper Raoundabout)

We also plan to start the site set-up for Phase Two during the week commencing 29 May 2017 and aim to complete the most disruptive mainlaying phase by January 2018. Following completion of the mainlaying, minor works will then continue until early 2019.

Will water supplies be cut off?

Water supplies will continue as normal while the old water main is being replaced, apart from temporary interruptions as properties are individually connected to the new water main. During this work your water supply will be interrupted for 30 to 60 minutes.

We will make sure those customers whose water supply is directly affected by these works are notified in advance.

What does this mean for businesses, schools and organisations in the area?

We understand the work we carry out on our water mains can cause disruption and we want to work closely with local businesses, schools and other organisations to help ease any impact.

We would encourage organisations to contact us by email bearegreentocapel@seswater.co.uk so we can:

  • Work closely to plan the specific timing, location and duration of works in the area

  • Work together to ensure deliveries can get through and customers can still access any shops, restaurants and businesses

  • Provide extra signage to ensure everyone knows it is “business as usual”

  • Share information on the scheme to be circulated to residents, customers, employees etc.

Where our work leads to unavoidable disruption to the usual operation of businesses, and in particular where there is clear evidence that our work has had an impact on the profits, we will pay compensation for that loss. Please follow link http://www.waterplc.com/pages/business/your-bill-and-account/business/loss-of-profit-claims/ for more information about our policy for loss of businesses.

Come and meet the team at our dedicated “Drop-In Session”
We will be holding a drop-in event on Wednesday 18th October 2017 to give customers and stakeholders the opportunuty to come and meet the project team and discuss any queries or concerns they may have. The session will run from 3:30pm to 7:30pm at Capel Parish Council Hall (55a The Street, Capel RH5 5LD).
