Sutton and East Surrey Water will begin mains replacement work in Linkfield Lane, Redhill next month (April), part of a council and utilities co-ordinated improvement scheme for the area.
Surrey County Council (as the highways authority) has liaised with Southern Gas Networks and Sutton and East Surrey Water to co-ordinate a programme of repair and refurbishment activity in the area. Snow and freezing conditions earlier this year have extensively damaged local roads and essential work on gas and water services will be completed before the road surface is relaid.
“Liaison on work programmes to minimise disruption is normal procedure, but in this case it was prompted by the extreme weather conditions we all experienced in January, which have broken up road surfaces. Surrey County Council will resurface Daneshill once both utilities finish our groundwork,” explained Kevin Shilling, Projects Manager for Sutton and East Surrey Water.
Starting on April 6, during the schools’ Easter break, Sutton and East Surrey Water will undertake mains replacement in Linkfield Lane, from the Batts Hill junction through to Daneshill. Traffic flow will be maintained by controlled signal-lighting.
The aging six-inch diameter (150mm) spun iron and three-inch (80mm) cast iron mains will be replaced with 180mm and 125mm diameter high performance polyethylene mains.
Daneshill, off Linkfield Lane, is currently closed by Surrey County Council for all through traffic while Southern Gas Networks completes its upgrading work. It will remain closed while Sutton and East Surrey Water replaces mains in this area.
Ian Lake, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “The severe weather has taken its toll on Daneshill, to the extent that we had to close the road for safety reasons. Repairing it was a top priority, but we knew that both Southern Gas Networks and Sutton and East Surrey Water were due to carry out works of their own. As it clearly would have made no sense at all to repair the road only for it to be dug up again, we talked to the utilities and arranged for their work to be brought forward. We’re very grateful for their co-operation, which means that we can get down to bringing the road back up to the standard we expect just as soon as they have completed their work.”
Further mains replacement work in Linkfield Lane, from the Daneshill junction to Hurstleigh Drive, is scheduled to be carried out during the school summer holidays.
